Harpur’s Bistro project open

We’re delighted that Harpur’s Bistro, a brand new training restaurant at Buxton & Leek College has officially opened. Morrison Design were the appointed Architects for the project.

The bistro, which is open to the public, is a training facility for the college’s hospitality students – and is entirely run by the students themselves. It provides the opportunity to get hands-on experience in contemporary dining while completing their studies.

The bistro is housed within Devonshire Dome in Buxton, Derbyshire. The Dome is an architecturally stunning building and, with its 44-column, 145ft diameter colonnade supporting the 560-ton roof, it is one of Buxton’s most famous landmarks.

”Following discussion with the catering tutors to understand the requirements for the Bistro, the challenges were; provide varied learning spaces reflective of small local restaurants, maintain the character of the Grade 2 listed building, whilst minimising any alterations within the existing building fabric.

The proposal was for the space to be subdivided into 3 dining areas; bar, intimate tables and a larger party space using larger items of furniture to give a varied range of real-world learning experiences. We used our expertise in hospitality to design something simple for students to use, which fitted the historic nature of the building and is welcoming for the public to relax and enjoy.

A huge thank you to Sophie and Cinzia from the Morrison Design team who worked hard on the project.”
