A final twist in the Chopper Challenge tale

Those that have been following John’s fundraising efforts so far this year will know that he’s spent months restoring a Mk3 Raleigh Chopper to its former glory, ready to take on his 15 mile commute to work.

John successfully completed his commute a couple of weeks ago, with the 15 miles forming part of his epic 2,024 mile challenge which sees him cycling, walking and running 2,024 miles in 2024 – an average of over 39 miles every single week. All in aid of Alzheimer’s Society – a charity very close to his heart.

After completing his commute John decided to raise even more money by auctioning off the Raleigh Chopper on eBay, with all proceeds being donated to the charity. However, unbeknown to John, his friends Adam, William and Mark couldn’t bear to see him part with the bike after his months of fundraising and restoration work so they hatched a plan. The former school friends successfully bid for the bike and gifted it to John – a generous reward for his mammoth efforts.

John said: “I’m overwhelmed that my friends decided to buy the Raleigh Chopper for me. It’s an incredible act of generosity for which I’m so grateful. We’ve known each other since school and they’ve been by my side through losing my parents to dementia in recent years. They knew how much work I’d put into the bike and I couldn’t be more thankful to them for it. Don’t expect another commute on it any time soon though!”

The Raleigh Chopper made £300 for Alzheimer’s Society. This has been added to John’s fundraising pot which now stands at £1,006 – just ahead of his £1,000 target. John still has a few months of cycling ahead to complete his 2,024 mile challenge and we’re all behind him every step (or pedal!) of the way.
