Morrison Design have once again teamed up with the University of Derby – this time on the incredible
Devonshire Dome in Buxton, Derbyshire.
The Dome is an architecturally stunning building and, with its 44-column, 145ft diameter colonnade
supporting the 560-ton roof, it is one of Buxton’s most famous landmarks.
Built in the late 18th century by the 5th Duke of Devonshire as the Great Stables, it provided facilities for
up to 120 horses and accommodation for the servants and ostlers accompanying visitors who were
staying in the Crescent.
Nearly a century after its construction, the building was converted to eventually become the Devonshire
Royal Hospital; in 2001 the University of Derby acquired the building and the Dome is now a campus for
both the University and Buxton College.
Nik Clarke, Director at Morrison Design, said: “we’re excited to once again be teaming up with the
University of Derby and this time on such an extraordinary building. Watch this space for more
updates!”
