Morrison Design were appointed as architects for the comprehensive refurbishment of The Sloane Club, a historic private members’ club in the heart of Chelsea. The project aimed to reposition the Club for a new generation of members, while carefully respecting the character and heritage of its 19th-century building within a conservation area.

The scope of works included the refurbishment of 64 guest bedrooms and suites, five bar and restaurant spaces, three private dining rooms, a new wellness suite and a complete reconfiguration of the front-of-house experience. Public areas were opened up and reorganised to improve flow and legibility, creating a more intuitive journey through the Club while retaining a series of distinctive, characterful spaces.

“The brief was about evolution rather than reinvention – creating spaces that feel contemporary and relevant, while still honouring the Club’s history and sense of belonging.”
Les Witten, Associate Director.

A key architectural intervention was the transformation of the rooftop terrace. Previously limited to seasonal use, the terrace has been reimagined as a light, elegant, all-year-round destination featuring a retractable glazed roof. Constrained by the existing structure, the design prioritised clarity and simplicity, resulting in a refined space that has become the social hub of the Club and a significant expansion of its food and beverage offering.

“Turning the terrace into a genuinely year-round space was one of the biggest challenges of the project. The aim was to create something that feels effortless – open, light and inviting – despite the complexity behind it.”
Peter Newman-Earp, Director, Morrison Design.

The completed refurbishment delivers a revitalised and confident identity for The Sloane Club, one that balances atmosphere, functionality and heritage, while supporting the evolving needs of its members.
