Josh’s Derby Masterplan

Josh Bolt, Trainee Architectural Technologist at Morrison Design, has been proudly displaying his university work in Derby’s City Lab this week.

Josh was challenged with a group task as part of the final year of his Architectural Technology degree at the University of Derby. The brief was to design a masterplan for the redevelopment of four central locations in Derby – River lights, Memorial Gardens, Cathedral Green and North Riverside – part of the Derby City Masterplan 2030 and the ‘Our City. Our River’ initiative.

The group responded with an innovative design aiming to increase footfall in the area which is currently underutilised. The concept included a sustainable centre for learning, especially suited to university students, a river area with a marina, restaurants and bars, a high end retail site, luxury apartments, hotel and co working spaces.

Josh said: “Linking the spaces together was paramount so we carefully considered how users would access the spaces, whether they’re pedestrians, cyclists, road users or arriving by public transport. I’ve really enjoyed working on this project, we had a great group with lots of creative ideas for the space. We worked out which were the most impactful and appropriate for the area and our masterplan came together.”
