A closer look at the craft behind the chair

Selfie of Nik Clarke smiling at the camera with large 'Porto' 3D letters in blue behind him. He's stood in a cobbled square with an ornate stone building behind him.

Our Director, Nik Clarke, recently travelled to Porto for a fascinating chairmakers experience, kindly invited by Castlebrook and hosted by CMcadeiras.

Photo of lots of pieces of wood resembling chair legs and other pieces hanging on the wall of an industrial building.

The visit offered a behind-the-scenes look at the chair-making process, from the selection and preparation of materials through to the skilled craftsmanship involved in producing the finished piece.

Photo of a man with his back to the camera in a production facility with machinery around him. There are pieces of wood in the foreground and a sign on the back wall which says 'pressure isn't always a bad thing'.

It was a great opportunity to learn more about the time, precision and expertise that goes into something we might otherwise take for granted – as well as seeing first-hand how traditional techniques and modern manufacturing come together.

A big thank you to Castlebrook for the invitation and to CMcadeiras for such an interesting and insightful experience.
