John is almost halfway through his mammoth 2,040 mile challenge in aid of Alzheimer’s Society.
“The May weather hasn’t been too bad so I’ve been able to enjoy some different routes. These have included out to Parsley Hay, The Stepping Stones at Dovedale and past the water mill near Osmaston. And even on the commute home, I’ve seen some sights from my bike that I would have missed had I been in the car – kites and buzzards and little weasels crossing the road in front of me.
I’ve also been out to the well dressings at Tissington. So much time goes into these dressings and it was something my mother took me to as a kid. I particularly liked the one supporting the Guide Dogs this year.
The Raleigh Chopper has handlebars now and is nearly complete. I’m hopeful that I will get to ride it to work in July but when I say hopeful, I’m also full of trepidation. A 14 mile commute, in rush hour, through Derbyshire’s rolling hills on an old kids classic with 3 gears, rebuilt by me. If that’s not worth a donation to Alzheimer’s Society, I don’t know what is!”
